Basement: Who do you draw inspiration from?
Dylan: Instagram! I draw so much inspiration from Zhang JiaCheng, Campbell Addy, Clara Balzary, Nadine Ijewere, Tyler Mitchell, and Maxime Imbert. My favorite stylist is also Ib Kamara.
Basement: How would you describe yourself as an artist / describe the intention behind your work?
Dylan: To me, being an artist is something that ranges from how I see things to what color pants I wear. It's an underlying part of the way I go about my day. As for photography specifically, my favorite thing to capture by far is portraits. I feel like intention is something that I'm still developing and need more time to process. For now, I just love creating compositions that satisfy my taste.
Basement: What do you look for as you frame a shot? What catches your eye when you’re on a shoot?
Dylan: In general and recently especially, I love framing specific details of a piece of clothing or a face. I try to focus on things that go unnoticed in most photography. I also enjoy focusing/shooting on a color palette.
Basement: Has growing up in the Chicagoland area had any impact on your work or experiences as an artist?
Dylan: I would say so. When I was first getting into photography, I was really interested in architectural and street photography. I used to take the El down every weekend just to shoot things and I eventually started bringing models along with me. I kind of outgrew my old photographic interests in Chicago when I was introduced to another form of photography, which ended up keeping my interests flowing.
Basement: Where do you see yourself as an artist/ photographer in the future?
Dylan: I see myself studying photography in college and then ideally becoming a full time freelance photographer, working with magazines and fashion brands. My dream is to photograph the musical artists and celebrities I love.
Basement: What is unique about being an artist in this generation?
Dylan: You have so much freedom to express yourself. Especially in the art communities I'm interested in, everyone loves to be themselves.
